Modeling With The Masters is a unique opportunity to participate in an immersive, hands-on clinic where participants learn basic and advanced modeling techniques. These classes are taught by experienced Master Model Railroaders. You must be registered for the convention and pay the extra fare to attend a MWTM Clinic.

“Building a Branchline Coaling Station” – Instructors: Jim Gore, MMR and Peter Youngblood, MMR. – Friday 8:00 am to 12:00 pm

This branchline coaling station is a relic of the times when there was no automatic loading of coal for steam engines. The fireman would climb the ladder and shovel the coal directly into the tender. The coaling station was located on an ATSF branchline near Newton, KS. It is ideal for a lot of short-line railroads. Jim and Peter will demonstrate how it can be built, weathered, and (if you want) detailed. THIS IS A 4-HOUR CLASS. THE COST OF THE CLASS IS $50.

“Better Realism for Railroad Telephone Poles” – Instructors: Peter Youngblood, MMR and Jim Gore, MMR. – Friday 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Better railroad telephone pole realism on our model railroads is most often overlooked because they’re so commonplace, we don’t easily notice that they aren’t always the same, and why. Applicable to any scale, Peter, assisted by Jim will cover the basics of how they differ and how easy it is to model plastic poles (supplied) and their insulators more accurately. THIS IS A 2-HOUR CLASS. THE COST OF THIS CLASS IS $30.

“Improving Figures of Layouts” – Instructors: Jim Gore, MMR and Peter Youngblood, MMR. – Friday 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Jim will discuss various ways to add some “life” to your layouts. Making your scenery look like it is actively populated is an important reminder to operators and modelers that your model railroad has a purpose. You will be provided with some primed HO figures to paint and detail as well as learning some important tips on how to improve pre-painted or detailed figures. THIS IS A 2-HOUR CLASS. THE COST OF THIS CLASS IS $30.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING THEIR OWN TOOLS IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE CLINICS.

A list of tools will be provided upon registration and payment of the extra fare. In addition to the required tools, bring any other tools that you usually use or may find useful. A good way to carry these tools is to buy a small, inexpensive plastic tackle box. They are usually available at department stores year-round.
